2026 Annual Appeal

Supporting local agriculture, food producers, and makers on Nantucket Island

Sustainable Nantucket relies on individuals' generosity to expand our four programs:

Farm-to-School Program: We teach STEM-based classes to Nantucket Public School (NPS) students and host summer programs for Nantucket STAR Program, Nantucket Boys and Girls Club (NBGC), Nantucket Community School, and the Maria Mitchell Association. We have spearheaded and sustained donations of island-grown produce to the NPS lunch program and collaborated with Nourish Nantucket to distribute farm-fresh vegetables to the Family Resource Center and NBGC.

Farmers and Artisans Market: With an extended season this year, farmers, artisans, and local non-profits gathered downtown every Saturday morning from May through October for our weekly market. We continue to help islanders and visitors alike to #shoplocal.

Mentor-Farmer Program: Our newest additions, Sea Legs Farm and In Situ Native Plant Nursery, have been thriving alongside our established farmers, Eat Fire Farm, Fog Town Farm, and Washashore Farm. You can find their offerings at our 24/7, honor-based Farmstand. Additionally, we offered over ten free workshops to the public, including fruit tree pruning, welding basics, beekeeping, introduction to biochar, and official training in chicken processing.

NantucketGrown™: Two years in the making, we are thrilled to officially announce that The Sustainable Nantucket Cookbook will be released in March 2027! Twenty-three local chefs share more than seventy recipes inspired by our farms and surrounding waters, alongside vignettes profiling Nantucket farmers, fisherfolk, and artisans preserving New England foodways.

In 2027, we hope to:

  • Continue our efforts to put more locally sourced produce & fish into the NPS lunch program through the creation of a “dock to school” initiative
  • Collaborate with island conservation groups & farmers to implement biochar and local compost to improve soil health
  • Provide resources and training to expand local protein offerings, including free-range poultry
  • Establish a site to install a geothermal greenhouse for year-round growing, and purchase hydroponic trailers for youth education

Your donations have made access to local produce and agriculture a reality. With your support, we look forward to continuing to educate the next generation of islanders, expanding our community programs, and improving the environment that sustains us all.

With deep thanks in advance,

Posie Constable and the Sustainable Nantucket Team
